100matolog

Krakowska 26

Historia krasnala

100matolog is the most nerve-wracking — and arguably the most entertaining — dwarf in Wrocław's ever-growing bronze family. Perched at ul. Krakowska 26 near the Medical University, this little dentist clutches an enormous pair of forceps in one hand and a freshly extracted tooth (bigger than his head) in the other, wearing an expression that is equal parts menacing and mischievous. His name is a delightful Polish pun: '100' sounds like 'sto', and 'stomatolog' means dentist — making him the city's very own tooth-pulling trickster. He was installed to serve the dwarf community living near the medical campus, catering especially to those sweet-toothed krasnale who spent too long near Wedelek's chocolate bar.

Historia i znaczenie

100matolog was placed at ul. Krakowska 26, beside the Wrocław Medical University (formerly the Academy of Medicine), a fitting home for the dwarf world's first and only dental professional. He was sculpted by Beata Zwolańska-Hołod, one of the key artists behind Wrocław's broader dwarf sculpture programme. His arrival was celebrated as a milestone — until then, the dwarf community had no doctor of any kind, a particularly pressing problem given how many krasnale lived near sweet shops. The dwarf tradition itself traces back to the Orange Alternative movement of the 1980s, when painted dwarf graffiti became a symbol of peaceful protest against communist rule, and bronze figures began appearing city-wide from 2005 onwards.

Ciekawostki

  • His name is a pun: in Polish, '100' is pronounced 'sto', making '100matolog' a cheeky play on 'stomatolog' — the Polish word for dentist
  • The tooth he holds is comically oversized — nearly as large as the dwarf himself, which makes him one of the most recognisable figures in the city
  • He is the first and only dentist in all of Wrocław's dwarf community, a historic milestone for krasnale dental health
  • Located at the Medical University, he fits right in among future doctors and nurses who walk past him every day
  • Despite his fearsome expression and giant forceps, visitors report he quickly wins you over — much like a real dentist visit (in theory)

Jak znaleźć tego krasnala

From the Rynek (Market Square), head south along ul. Świdnicka, then turn left onto ul. Krakowska and continue for about 500 metres. The dwarf is stationed at building number 26 on the left side of the street, near the entrance to the Medical University. Look for him low to the ground beside the building facade — the oversized tooth he holds makes him hard to miss once you're at the right address.
