Abruzjusz

Świdnicka 33

Historia krasnala

Abruzjusz — also affectionately known as Szaszłykarz, the skewer man — is one of Wrocław's most deliciously themed dwarfs, stationed at ul. Świdnicka 32 right in the heart of the city's most beloved pedestrian street. This cheerful bronze figure proudly brandishes a skewer loaded with grilled meat, a fragrant tribute to the Abruzzo region of central Italy, famous throughout the peninsula for its arrosticini — the traditional lamb skewers that are a cornerstone of Abruzzese cuisine. Standing on Świdnicka, one of Wrocław's busiest and most historically rich streets, Abruzjusz adds a whiff of Italian sunshine to a thoroughfare that was once the scene of some of the most colourful episodes of the Orange Alternative movement.

Historia i znaczenie

Abruzjusz was installed at ul. Świdnicka 32 in Wrocław's Old Town district, sponsored by a local business inspired by the culinary traditions of Abruzzo — a rugged, mountainous region of southern-central Italy known for its sheep farming and rustic grilled meats. His nickname, Szaszłykarz (meaning 'skewer seller' or 'grill man' in Polish), reflects both his appearance and the playful way Wrocław's dwarf community names its members after their trade. Świdnicka Street itself holds special significance in the story of Wrocław's dwarfs: it was here that the Orange Alternative held their famous happenings in the 1980s, and where Papa Krasnal — the grandfather of all Wrocław dwarfs — was installed in 2001.

Ciekawostki

  • Abruzjusz takes his name from Abruzzo, the rugged Italian region celebrated for arrosticini — small skewers of seasoned lamb grilled over charcoal
  • His nickname, Szaszłykarz, is the Polish word for a skewer or kebab seller, making him one of the most culinarily specific dwarfs in the city
  • Ul. Świdnicka, where he stands, is the same street where the Orange Alternative held its legendary 1987 happening 'Krasnoludki na Świdnickiej' — Dwarfs on Świdnicka
  • Papa Krasnal, the oldest and largest dwarf in Wrocław, stands just a few hundred metres away on the same street, making Świdnicka a true dwarf pilgrimage route
  • The skewer Abruzjusz holds is so shiny from curious hands that it practically glows — many visitors give it a rub for good luck before dinner
