Alpinki
Strzegomska 46-56
Story
Alpinki — whose name means 'little alpine climbers' — are a trio of determined bronze dwarfs scaling an imaginary peak at ul. Strzegomska 46–56, beside the Wrocławski Park Biznesu (Wrocław Business Park). The three companions are named Głazek, Rutek, and Zarembek, each one a miniature tribute to a legendary Wrocław-connected mountaineer, and together they embody the city's proud and adventurous climbing heritage. Sculpted by Tomasz Moczek, the group is a moving reminder that even the bravest summits belong a little bit to Wrocław. Despite the city being famously flat as a table, Wrocław has produced some of the greatest high-altitude climbers in the world — and Alpinki make sure nobody forgets it.
History & Significance
Alpinki were created by sculptor Tomasz Moczek — the same artist who placed the very first five bronze dwarfs in Wrocław in 2005 — and installed at the Wrocławski Park Biznesu on ul. Strzegomska. The trio honours three remarkable mountaineers with Wrocław ties: Głazek commemorates Kazimierz Głazek, the mathematician, alpinist and Himalayan climber who studied at Wrocław University and was part of the first Polish team to summit an 8,000-metre peak (Broad Peak Middle, 1975); Rutek honours Wanda Rutkiewicz, the legendary mountaineer who studied in Wrocław and became the first woman to summit K2 in 1986; and Zarembek pays tribute to Stanisław Krystyn Zaremba, another prominent Wrocław-associated climber. Together they stand as a heartfelt memorial to Polish climbing greatness.
Fun Facts
- Rutek, the smallest of the trio, honours Wanda Rutkiewicz — the first woman ever to summit K2, the world's second-highest mountain
- Głazek is named for Kazimierz Głazek, who was part of the team that made the first-ever Polish ascent of an eight-thousander in 1975
- Wanda Rutkiewicz studied at the Wrocław University of Technology — making Rutek a proud local hero
- Sculptor Tomasz Moczek also created the very first five dwarfs installed in Wrocław in 2005, so Alpinki are in expert hands
- Despite Wrocław being one of Poland's flattest cities, it has produced world-class Himalayan climbers — Alpinki are a bronze celebration of that beautiful contradiction
