Amrest

Międzyrzecka 4

Story

Amrest is one of Wrocław's most business-minded little dwarfs, standing at ul. Międzyrzecka 4 beside the restored Pałac Hollenderów — a beautiful 19th-century palace tucked along the Oława river in the city's southeastern Siedlec district. Sculpted by Grzegorz Łagowski, this confident bronze figure pays tribute to AmRest Holdings, one of the largest restaurant operating companies in Europe, whose story began right here in Wrocław in 1993. The dwarf stands in front of a grand building that was spectacularly restored after a devastating fire in 1996, making him a symbol of both entrepreneurial ambition and the city's remarkable capacity for reinvention. This is one of the more off-the-beaten-path dwarfs in Wrocław — a rewarding find for adventurous families who like to explore beyond the Old Town.

History & Significance

The Amrest dwarf was created by sculptor Grzegorz Łagowski and placed at the Pałac Hollenderów, ul. Międzyrzecka 4, to honour AmRest Holdings — a company founded in Wrocław in 1993 by Henry McGovern and his partners as American Restaurants Services. The company began by opening the first Pizza Hut restaurant in Poland and grew into an international restaurant giant operating KFC, Burger King, Starbucks, and Pizza Hut across more than 20 countries. The Pałac Hollenderów itself was built in 1886 in the northern Renaissance style by Fritz Hollender, survived World War II intact, burned down in 1996, and was fully restored after 2006 — today it is privately owned by Henry McGovern, giving the dwarf's address a direct personal connection to the company it celebrates.
