Story

Bankus Pieniatek is Wroclaw's most cunning financial gnome, stationed at the grand tenement house Pod Siedmioma Elektorami on the Main Market Square. He loves money with every fibre of his tiny bronze body and, according to local legend, has never once carried cash -- preferring instead to tell everyone he forgot his wallet. He keeps a snake in his pocket, which locals say is 'domesticated but does its job', and he is known as an investor-speculator who inflates bubbles just for the sport of watching them pop. Despite his questionable financial habits, he always looks impeccably cheerful.

History & Significance

Bankus Pieniatek was created by sculptor Beata Zwolanska-Holod and placed at Rynek 9/11, in front of the entrance to the SKOK credit union beside Bank Zachodni WBK. His name is a playful diminutive of 'bank' and 'pieniadze' (money), and he represents the financial institutions that have long occupied the tenements lining the Market Square.

Inspiration

The dwarf reflects the centuries-old banking and merchant tradition of Wroclaw's Main Market Square, where exchange houses and financial institutions have operated since the medieval period. His companion piece is the Bankomatki trio on ul. Kuznicza, forming a small gnome banking empire. The character of a loveable but slightly shady money-lover is a gentle satire of financial culture.

Fun Facts

  • Bankus was sculpted by Beata Zwolanska-Holod, one of the leading female sculptors in the Wroclaw dwarf tradition.
  • He allegedly keeps a snake in his pocket -- supposedly tame, but effective at discouraging thieves.
  • The official lore says he never carries cash and always claims he forgot his wallet, making him the ultimate ironic banking mascot.
  • His name combines 'bankus' (a playful form of 'bank') with 'pieniadze' (Polish for money) -- one of the more transparent names in the whole collection.
  • The tenement behind him, Pod Siedmioma Elektorami (House of Seven Electors), is one of the most historically significant buildings on the Market Square.

How to Find This Dwarf
