History & Significance

Germazowy Onkus (also known as Oncky) was created through a unique collaboration between the Dom Samochodowy Germaz car dealership and children from the Clinic of Bone Marrow Transplantation, Oncology and Paediatric Haematology in Wroclaw. The figurine was sculpted by Beata Zwolanska-Holod, with the design input coming directly from the young patients themselves. He was placed at ul. Strzegomska 139 in front of the Germaz showroom. The dwarf is part of Wroclaw's broader tradition of bronze krasnale that began with the Orange Alternative anti-communist movement in the 1980s.

Inspiration

Onkus is a tribute to the courage of young cancer patients at Wroclaw's paediatric oncology clinic. The Germaz car dealership, a family-run Suzuki and KGM dealer operating at ul. Strzegomska 139 since the early 2000s, sponsored the dwarf as a gesture of support for sick children. The name 'Onkus' playfully combines the prefix 'Onko-' (from oncology) with the classic dwarf suffix '-us,' while 'Germazowy' ties him to his sponsor. The collaboration between a car dealership and a children's hospital makes this one of Wroclaw's most heartwarming dwarf stories.

Take tram line 10 or 33 heading west along ul. Strzegomska and get off near the Germaz car dealership at number 139. The dwarf stands in front of the showroom building. If driving, the dealership is easy to spot on the south side of Strzegomska, in the Fabryczna district.
