Story
Uchodźczyni (The Refugee) arrived at Wroclaw's Main Train Station carrying everything she owned, just as tens of thousands of Ukrainians did in the days after Russia's invasion in February 2022. This small bronze figure stands near the station entrance as a permanent reminder of the volunteers who rushed to help and the families who arrived, exhausted and frightened, seeking safety. She is one of a pair — her companion, the Volunteer dwarf, stands beside her.
History & Significance
Uchodźczyni was unveiled near the main entrance of Wroclaw's Central Railway Station (Dworzec Glowny PKP) as part of the campaign 'Szacunek, wdzięcznosc, wspólnota' (Respect, Gratitude, Community). The pair — Uchodźczyni and Wolontariusz — were created as a symbolic tribute to all unnamed volunteers who helped Ukrainian refugees streaming through the station in early 2022.
Inspiration
The city of Wroclaw was one of the most active Polish cities in welcoming Ukrainian refugees. Hundreds of volunteers worked around the clock at the main station providing food, information, clothing, and shelter. The dwarf is a thank-you to those volunteers and a memorial to the refugees who passed through — most of whose names will never be known.
