Story
Więzień — also known as Więziennik or Rozbójnik — is Wroclaw's most notorious lawbreaker, locked up behind real iron bars in the courtyard of the old city prison on ul. Więzienna. He sits in shackles, with a ball and chain on his ankle, condemned to an eternal sentence for the most heinous crime in dwarf society: shaving the beard of a fellow krasnal. No parole. No appeal.
History & Significance
Więzień was placed by sculptor Marcin Łuczkowski on 12 February 2006 at ul. Więzienna 6, the site of Wroclaw's historic city prison. Ul. Więzienna (Prison Street) takes its name from the medieval gaol that once dominated the lane. The dwarf is visible behind actual metal bars set into the historic wall, creating one of the most theatrical and photogenic dwarf installations in the city.
Inspiration
The location itself provided the entire concept — a mischievous dwarf imprisoned in an actual former prison on Prison Street is an irresistible idea. Sculptor Marcin Łuczkowski was commissioned to bring the concept to life, and the result became one of Wroclaw's most visited and photographed dwarfs.
