Story

Artek is a bearded dwarf who lifts a long-nosed carnival or theatre mask to his face and opens his mouth wide, at Krakowska 180 in Księże. In the photo his eyes are shut, his cap is pushed back and the mask nearly covers one side of his face, as if he is in the middle of a dramatic line. The sandy brick wall behind him sets off the bronze.

History & Significance

wromap.pl lists Artek at Krakowska 180 with the sculptor Sebastian Obst and no appearance date. We found no second source and no information about who commissioned him. Our database lists his district as Księże.

Inspiration

The mask and the dramatic pose suggest an actor or a carnival-goer. The name Artek could be short for a name like Artur, or for artist, but we found no source that explains it, so this is only our guess.
