Story

Binio is no ordinary dwarf — he carries a paintbrush in his tiny hand and art in his heart. Born on 4 October 2017 in the courtyard of the Fine Arts School on ul. Piotra Skargi 23, he was conceived, funded, and designed entirely by the school's own Student Council. Over 100 project ideas were submitted, four finalists sculpted clay models in the school's sculpture studio, and a jury chose the design by student Jadwiga Bień. Legend has it that Binio occasionally sneaks inside to admire the student paintings hanging in the corridors, nodding approvingly at the ones he likes most.

History & Significance

The dwarf was initiated by the Student Council of the Stanislaw Kopystynski Fine Arts High School (Liceum Sztuk Plastycznych im. S. Kopystyńskiego). Students raised funds by running an 'Art Café' at school events, then organised an open design competition. The winning clay model was cast in bronze by the school's sculpture teacher, Wojciech Małek. Binio was unveiled on 4 October 2017.

Inspiration

Binio's name honours Jerzy Wojciech Bińiec, a long-time painting and drawing teacher and former director of the Fine Arts School. The name playfully contracts his surname into a warmly affectionate nickname. Naming the dwarf after a beloved teacher was the Student Council's way of celebrating the school's artistic heritage and the people who shaped it.

Fun Facts

  • Binio was the 200th dwarf added to the school grounds area — quite a milestone for a paintbrush-carrying sprite.
  • More than 100 design proposals were submitted before the jury shortlisted just four finalists.
  • The bronze cast was made by a teacher at the very school where Binio now stands, making him a true in-house creation.
  • His name is a playful nickname built from the surname 'Bińiec' — say it quickly and you can hear the connection.
  • Students funded Binio themselves by selling cakes and drinks at art events, making him one of the most community-built dwarfs in the city.
