Story

Chemik II is Wroclaw's second chemistry dwarf, standing proudly at ul. Cypriana Kamila Norwida 1/3, right at the Faculty of Chemistry of Wroclaw University of Science and Technology. Legend has it that he graduated with top honours and has never once removed his lab coat — not even at the annual dwarf festival. He is so devoted to science that other dwarfs joke he can turn water into a compound with a more interesting molecular formula.

History & Significance

The Chemistry Faculty of Wroclaw University of Science and Technology (Politechnika Wroclawska) has a long tradition of commissioning dwarfs to celebrate milestones. Chemik I arrived first, funded on the occasion of Professor Pawel Kafarski's 60th birthday by the Department of Bioorganic Chemistry. Chemik II followed as a second scholarly tribute, stationed at the main faculty building to welcome students and researchers arriving for lectures. The Norwida campus is home to multiple science-themed dwarfs, making it one of the denser academic dwarf clusters in the city.

Inspiration

Chemik II represents the spirit of chemistry education and research at Politechnika Wroclawska, one of Poland's leading technical universities. The dwarf honours the chemists, students and professors who have worked in the faculty's laboratories, and its presence is a nod to Wroclaw's strong scientific heritage. Chemistry-themed dwarfs on university campuses are a popular way for academic communities to join the city's growing bronze family.

Fun Facts

  • Chemik II is part of a duo — Chemik I was installed nearby earlier, making them the city's first pair of chemistry-themed brother dwarfs.
  • The Norwida campus hosts several science dwarfs, turning the area into an unofficial academic dwarf trail.
  • He stands approximately 2.2 km from the city centre — far enough for a nice tram ride on line 4 or 5.
  • Local students reportedly rub his test tube for luck before exams.
  • Access to see him up close may be restricted by campus gates during evenings and weekends.
