Story

Edukacjusz is a small, weathered dwarf who keeps a low profile near the entrance of a college on Krakowska street. In the photo his cap is pulled low over a lined face with a bushy beard, and he is tucked in among greenery and a metal railing, so you have to look closely to spot him. A fitting place for a dwarf of learning: he seems to be listening rather than talking.

History & Significance

Edukacjusz stands at Krakowska 56-62 in the Przedmieście Oławskie district. Wromap.pl names the sculptor as Anna Bujak and gives the date 25 July 2008, while the Polish Wikipedia list of Wrocław dwarfs gives the same address and the location 'Wyższa Szkoła Zarządzania Edukacja' but marks the author with a question mark. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace back to the Orange Alternative, a peaceful, absurdist protest movement founded in the city in 1986 by Waldemar Fydrych, whose members painted dwarfs on walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them.

Inspiration

Edukacjusz is clearly named after education: the Polish Wikipedia list places him at the Wyższa Szkoła Zarządzania 'Edukacja' (the 'Edukacja' School of Management), whose name matches his own. We found no source describing the dwarf's story or who paid for him, so we do not claim one.

Fun Facts

  • His name comes from the Polish word for education, and he stands at the school named 'Edukacja'.
  • Wromap.pl dates him to 25 July 2008 and credits sculptor Anna Bujak; the Polish Wikipedia list leaves the author blank.
  • Kreacjusz is only about 22 m away to the north, almost next door.
  • He is about 2.7 km from the Market Square.
  • Our map data places the Wikipedia coordinates and our own within a few metres of each other, so the location is well confirmed.
