Story

Elwruś Lutowniczek is the electronics school's own dwarf. He sits under the sign of the Elektroniczne Zakłady Naukowe on Braniborska Street, in a pointed hat with big ears and a face full of wrinkles, as if he had just spotted a short circuit. The dwarf guide has him saying that he could not have found a better place, that he has been extremely lucky in life, and that he fits in at school like a hand in a glove.

History & Significance

Elwruś Lutowniczek stands at Braniborska 57, at the Elektroniczne Zakłady Naukowe (EZN), a technical school named after Jean Frédéric Joliot-Curie. The sculptor is Beata Zwolańska-Hołod, and wromap dates the dwarf to 21 March 2014. The dwarf guide says he appeared for the 50th anniversary of the school, and that graduates and their parents came to greet him on the campus. Wromap notes that access may be limited by a gate or fence. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace their roots to the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now well over a thousand of them.

Inspiration

Elwruś is a tribute to a school of electronics. His surname, Lutowniczek, echoes the Polish word for soldering, a basic skill of electronics work. The dwarf celebrates the school's 50th anniversary and its generations of graduates.
