Story

Florianek stands to attention on Świdnicka Street in his buttoned-up uniform and peaked cap, one hand raised in a salute. He greets everybody the same way, whether they are a mayor or a pigeon. Legend says he has never once been caught off duty, not even during the lunch break.

History & Significance

Florianek is listed on wromap.pl at Świdnicka 18-20 and credited to sculptor Grzegorz Łagowski; it dates him to 30 April 2010. I found no second source for the author or date. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful anti-communist protest movement: on the nights of 30 and 31 August 1982 Waldemar 'Major' Fydrych painted the first dwarfs on walls in Sępolno and Biskupin. The first bronze dwarf, Papa Krasnal, was unveiled in 2001 on ul. Kazimierza Wielkiego, and in 2005 the city commissioned Tomasz Moczek to make five more, which started the collection.

Inspiration

The name echoes St Florian, the patron saint of firefighters, but I found no source saying this statue is a firefighter or who commissioned it. What the photo shows is a moustached, bearded dwarf in a uniform with rows of round buttons and a peaked cap, raising his hand to the brim in a salute.
