Story
Galeriusz peers out at you through an ornate bronze picture frame at ul. Kiełbaśnicza 28, as if he has just stepped out of a painting. His wide eyes, big nose and cheerful grin fill the frame, and his long bearded chin pokes out below it. The playful story is that he is the only dwarf in town who has been hung in a gallery and decided to walk out again. Hold your phone up and take a picture of him framed in his frame, so that you are framing a frame.
History & Significance
Wromap.pl credits Paweł Wagner as the sculptor. He stands on ul. Kiełbaśnicza in the Old Town, with Konstanty about 40 metres away and Ogorzałek i Opiłek about 84 metres away. The dwarf tradition he belongs to began with the Orange Alternative movement of the 1980s, and the first official bronze dwarfs were installed in 2005.
Inspiration
His name comes from galeria, a gallery, and the picture frame he holds makes the theme clear. The joke is that a dwarf is both the artwork and the viewer. Wrocław's hundreds of small bronze statues have become its best-known open-air exhibition.
