Story

GigaHercjusz is carrying something heavy, and he looks delighted about it. In the photo this bearded dwarf in a soft cap grins up at the camera while he balances a boxy contraption on his shoulder, its little drawers open and a plate on the front reading G4M3. It looks like a game console that is far too big for his little back. He stands inside a building at plac Grunwaldzki 22, about 1.9 km east of the Market Square, so you will be looking for him indoors rather than on the pavement.

History & Significance

Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful, non-violent protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. According to wromap.pl, GigaHercjusz was made by Tomasz Moczek and stands inside a building at plac Grunwaldzki 22. I found no source that gives his unveiling date, and none that names a sponsor or the building.

Inspiration

No source I found explains the idea behind GigaHercjusz. In the photo he carries a boxy device with open drawers and the characters G4M3 on its front plate. To my eye that reads like the word GAME written in leetspeak, but that is my own reading and not something a source confirms.

Fun Facts

  • wromap.pl credits the sculptor Tomasz Moczek.
  • The plate on the box he carries reads G4M3 in the photo.
  • He stands inside a building, not on the street, so you need to be able to enter to see him.
  • His nearest dwarfs are only 36 m, 46 m and 51 m away, so he is easy to combine with a short walk.
  • The box has little open drawers, so he looks as if he is moving house with his whole desk.
