Story

Gonito is a dwarf who peers into the distance. He leans over a bench-like wooden barrier and shades his eyes with both hands, as if searching the horizon for something he cannot quite make out. He wears a soft hat, has a thick moustache and a pointed beard, and his bronze has a deep grey-green finish. Behind him you can see a green-painted wooden structure. He stands at ul. Zwycięska 2 in the Partynice area, and visitors who love a bit of mystery will enjoy asking what exactly he is looking for.

History & Significance

Gonito was made by sculptor Tomasz Moczek and appeared on 5 May 2019, according to both wromap.pl and OpenStreetMap. Moczek is the sculptor behind Wrocław's very first group of dwarfs. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace back to the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since the early 2000s the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them, many in the quieter districts far from the Market Square. We found no source naming who commissioned or paid for Gonito.

Inspiration

The idea behind Gonito is not explained in any source we found. The statue itself shows a dwarf shading his eyes, and Polish speakers will hear the word gonitwa, meaning a race or chase, in the name, but that is our observation rather than a documented meaning. The OpenStreetMap entry links to a photo captioned Krasnal Koniarz, which may be an earlier or alternative name.
