Story

Hastuś has stepped out of the dark green yew bushes with something raised in his hand. In the photo this broad-faced dwarf in a pointed cap with a curled tip has bare shoulders, a heavy beard and a long flat object lifted high beside him, as if he is about to make a point. He stands at Robotnicza 72e in Szczepin, about 2.2 km west of the Market Square, and wromap.pl also lists him under the alias Pisarek.

History & Significance

Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful, non-violent protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. According to wromap.pl, Hastuś, also listed as Pisarek, was made by Marlena Zakrzewska and stands at Robotnicza 72e. I found no source that gives his unveiling date and none that names a sponsor.

Inspiration

No source I found explains the idea behind Hastuś. The photo shows a bearded dwarf holding up a long flat object that could be a pen or a tool, and I cannot tell which. His second name Pisarek can mean a clerk or small-time writer in Polish, but I found no source that links it to what he holds.
