Story

Impelek carries his pole over his shoulder like a man heading home after a long shift. In the photo this moustached dwarf in a rounded bucket-shaped cap squints off to the side and holds a long stick across his back, with glass doors and a bright interior behind him. He stands at Antoniego Słonimskiego 1 in Kleczków, about 2.2 km north-east of the Market Square, and the Krasnale Promenad Wrocławskich group is just 109 m to the north.

History & Significance

Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful, non-violent protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. According to wromap.pl, Impelek was made by Grzegorz Łagowski and appeared on 14 October 2010 at Antoniego Słonimskiego 1. A company-registry listing gives the same address for the company Impel S.A., and Wrocław also had a volleyball team called Impel Wrocław, so the name likely refers to Impel, but I found no source that names a sponsor or states the link.

Inspiration

Impelek's name echoes Impel, a Wrocław company whose registered address a company-registry listing gives as Słonimskiego 1, but I found no source that confirms the link. In the photo he carries a long stick across his shoulders, and I could not tell what it is meant to be.
