Story

Kruszek and his feathered companion Lakomczuszek (the 'Greedy Little Sparrow') are the sweetest duo on ul. Legnicka. Perched outside Cukiernia Wolak at number 158, they are forever mid-snack, surrounded — at least in their imagination — by the most irresistible pastries in Wroclaw. Lakomczuszek, the sparrow, is said to have found Kruszek after following the scent of freshly baked sugar all the way from the city centre. They have been inseparable ever since.

History & Significance

Kruszek and Lakomczuszek were installed in November 2015 outside Wolak Confectionery (Cukiernia Wolak) at ul. Legnicka 158 in the Gadow-Popowice Poludniowe neighbourhood, about 4 km west of the city centre. The two figures were commissioned by the bakery to celebrate the pleasures of homemade sweets and to charm customers before they even enter the shop.

Inspiration

The dwarf-and-bird pairing reflects the real-world charm of an old-fashioned confectionery — a place where both dwarfs and sparrows might linger for an extra pastry. Cukiernia Wolak is a traditional Wroclaw bakery, and the figures neatly capture that combination of cosy nostalgia and sweet temptation that defines the best neighbourhood cake shops.

Fun Facts

  • Lakomczuszek is one of very few bird characters in the entire Wroclaw dwarf collection — most companions are other dwarfs.
  • The pair were installed in November 2015, making them relative newcomers to the western stretches of ul. Legnicka.
  • Their location is about 4 km from the Market Square, rewarding dwarf hunters who venture beyond the city centre.
  • The name 'Lakomczuszek' literally means 'little greedy one' — a fitting title for a sparrow who cannot resist a crumb.
  • Locals claim that patting Lakomczuszek before entering the bakery guarantees you will find your favourite pastry still in stock.
