Story

Księgopełek has more books than he can count and still does not feel he has enough. Dwarf gossip says he once tried to shelve the whole street by title, and gave up only when he reached the letter B in the pavement stones. He is happiest in the company of anyone who will read to him, or at least sit quietly near him while reading. Bring a book if you visit; he will not mind which one.

History & Significance

Księgopełek stands at Generała Józefa Bema 7-9 in the Ołbin district and was made by Sebastian Obst. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful, non-violent protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; since 2005 the city has been filling its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. We found no date of installation and no sponsor, and do not state any.

Inspiration

The Polish word księga means "book", and the name begins with it, which makes the theme fairly clear; beyond that, no source we found explains the idea behind the statue, so we do not add details. The wromap.pl photo is a close-up of a bearded dwarf, and we could not confirm that it shows the statue at this address, so we do not describe props.
