Story

Laktoludka sits quietly in a green park by the Oder, her head bent over the tiny baby she holds close. She wears a little pointed cap, and her face is calm and tender. Dwarfs say that it is the quietest corner on the island, because even the wind slows down when she is feeding her child. Walk past softly.

History & Significance

Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a peaceful, absurdist protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. According to wromap.pl, Laktoludka belongs to a group called Krasnalka Karmiąca Piersią (the Breastfeeding Dwarf Woman), which also includes a dwarf called Laktocytek. The map lists her at wyspa Bielarska and gives 25 May 2024 as the date she appeared. No sculptor is listed, and who commissioned the dwarf is not publicly documented.

Inspiration

Her name combines lakto-, from the Latin word for milk, with the dwarf ending -ludka. The group name says plainly that she is a nursing mother, and the photo shows her holding an infant close. The statue celebrates breastfeeding in a public space, a theme that is rare among Wrocław's dwarfs. We found no source that explains who proposed the idea.
