Story
Ma(Ste)rche(fek) is the dwarf cook who hides in the flowerbed. In our photo he holds a lidded pot in one hand, among broad green and purple leaves, his long moustache curling over a shaggy beard. Dwarfs say he is practising a secret recipe and will not let anyone taste it until it is perfect. He is also listed as Czym Chatek Bogatek and Masterchefek.
History & Significance
Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a peaceful, absurdist protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. According to wromap.pl, he stands at Świdnicka 53, was made by Beata Zwolańska-Hołod and appeared on 11 April 2016. The map lists two alternative names, Czym Chatek Bogatek and Masterchefek. Who commissioned him is not publicly documented, and we could not find a second source for the dates.
Inspiration
One of his listed names, Masterchefek, plays on the television cooking show title MasterChef, and the lidded pot in his hand fits the theme of cooking. The odd spelling Ma(Ste)rche(fek) hides the word 'chef' inside it. The other name, Czym Chatek Bogatek, is a play on the Polish saying 'czym chata bogata' (what the house has to offer). We found no source explaining the choice in more detail.
