Story

Mechanik is a dwarf you meet at eye level, so crouch down. Photographed up close, he looks out from under a wide-brimmed hat with a deeply lined, thoughtful face and a thick beard, as if he is bent over a stubborn engine and about to find the fault. He lives on ul. Swojczycka in Swojczyce, where Polish Wikipedia lists him at a car service called BatMan, and his name, simply Mechanik, fits that setting. This is a good dwarf for a quiet, off-the-tourist-path outing.

History & Significance

Wromap.pl lists Mechanik at ul. Swojczycka 154 with no author and no date, while Polish Wikipedia lists him at Swojczycka 150, names the car service BatMan as his sponsor and gives the sculptor as unknown, so the sources disagree on the building number. OpenStreetMap carries a note that his location is only approximate. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace back to the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since the early 2000s the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them, many in the quieter districts far from the Market Square.

Inspiration

Polish Wikipedia names a car service called BatMan as the sponsor, which would explain the dwarf's job, mechanik meaning mechanic. The wide-brimmed hat and weathered face show a working craftsman, but we found no other source describing the design in detail.
