Story

Deep inside the Wroclaw Botanical Garden, where the air smells of earth and blossoms, Ogrodnik and Kierownik preside over the main alley like the most dedicated horticultural team in dwarf history. Ogrodnik (the Gardener) tends to the plants with devotion; Kierownik (the Manager) oversees operations with an air of botanical authority. Every autumn, as if to mark the harvest season, Ogrodnik receives a real pumpkin to look after. The garden, it seems, takes its dwarfs very seriously.

History & Significance

Ogrodnik and Kierownik were sculpted by architect Marcin Łuczkowski and installed in the Wroclaw Botanical Garden at ul. Henryka Sienkiewicza 23 on 29 May 2008. They stand on the garden's main alley, making them among the few dwarfs in the city that require an entry ticket to visit — since the Botanical Garden charges admission. The garden itself was founded in the early 19th century and is one of the oldest botanical gardens in Poland.

Inspiration

The Wroclaw Botanical Garden, founded in 1811, belongs to the University of Wroclaw and contains thousands of plant species from around the world. The choice to install a gardener-and-manager pair here reflects the garden's dual mission: scientific oversight (Kierownik) and hands-in-the-soil cultivation (Ogrodnik). The garden's autumn pumpkin festival is a real tradition, and Ogrodnik's seasonal pumpkin decoration has made him one of the most charmingly site-specific dwarfs in Wroclaw.
