Story

Olimpek is a lively dwarf with swept-back hair, a flowing beard and a twirled moustache, and a pointed cap with a bent tip. In the photo he holds out one arm while the other hand grips a bronze tablet covered in raised lettering and symbols. He looks like a showman about to announce the results of a very important contest.

History & Significance

According to wromap.pl, Olimpek was made by Beata Zwolańska-Hołod and appeared on 20 April 2022 at Aleja Aleksandra Brücknera 10, and access to the spot may be limited by a gate, fence or barrier. Wrocław's dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; the first bronze dwarf was placed on ul. Świdnicka in 2001, and hundreds have followed since. We found no source that says who commissioned Olimpek or what the symbols on his tablet mean.

Inspiration

His name echoes 'Olimp' and 'olimpijski', the Polish words for Olympus and Olympic, but we found no source confirming what the dwarf commemorates. The tablet in his hand carries raised lettering that is not legible in the photo, so we do not read anything into it.
