Story
Orpeusz sits in the Huby district, about 1.7 km south of the Market Square, wearing the weathered look of someone who has seen a great deal. The photo shows a bearded old dwarf in a drooping cap, his face deeply lined and his eyes half closed, leaning against a round lattice-like shape in front of a warm red-brick wall, with pale pebbles at his feet. His name echoes Orpheus, the mythical musician, so imagine him humming quietly to himself whenever the street goes quiet.
History & Significance
Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful, non-violent protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. According to wromap.pl, Orpeusz was made by Beata Zwolańska-Hołod and appeared on 20 January 2023, at Dyrekcyjna 5. wromap.pl warns that access to this address may be limited by a barrier, fence or gate. I found no other source for the date, and none that names a sponsor.
Inspiration
His name echoes Orpheus (Orfeusz in Polish), the musician of Greek myth, but no source I found confirms that this is the intended reference. The round lattice shape behind him in the photo could be a chair back or an instrument, and I cannot tell which.
