Story

Piastuś is a wide-eyed dwarf with a very big round nose, an upturned moustache and a fan-shaped beard. He wears a tall flat-topped cap with a band, holds a round disc stamped SP 98 and leans on a long pole, with a metal railing behind him. He stands at ul. Sycowska 22a in the Psie Pole-Zawidawie area, and he is a recent arrival: he appeared in November 2025.

History & Significance

Piastuś appeared on 7 November 2025, according to wromap.pl and OpenStreetMap, and the OpenStreetMap entry records the inscription SP 98 WROCŁAW. No source we found gives the sculptor or says who commissioned him. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace back to the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since the early 2000s the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them, many in the quieter districts far from the Market Square.

Inspiration

The inscription SP 98 WROCŁAW points to a Wrocław primary school (SP is the usual abbreviation of szkoła podstawowa), and another school dwarf nearby, Tysiąclatek, carries a similar SP 80 sign. The name Piastuś evokes the Piasts, Poland's first ruling dynasty, and the tall cap and staff may be meant to suggest a ruler, but no source we found confirms this, so please treat it as our reading of the statue.
