Story
Piotruś Pan is a dwarf who has refused to grow up, which is no small thing for someone who started out knee-high. He sits beside a shop window with his cap pulled low, a crooked smile and a nose-tip that shines like a coin. Dwarf legend says he never changes his age, only his mood, and today the mood is plainly mischievous. If you have a child with you, he is the right dwarf to meet first.
History & Significance
Piotruś Pan stands at Kolejowa 20 in the Przedmieście Świdnickie district and was made by Marlena Zakrzewska. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful, non-violent protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; since 2005 the city has been filling its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. We found no installation date and no sponsor for him, and do not state any.
Inspiration
Piotruś Pan is the Polish name of Peter Pan, J. M. Barrie's boy who never grows up; the name suggests the link, though no source we found spells out the intention behind the statue. The photo shows a smiling, wrinkled dwarf in a soft cap, and the tip of his nose is polished bright, which suggests visitors often touch it.
