Story

Pocztowiec is the dwarf postman who sorts the dwarf mail, and he has set up his post inside the post office at Rynek 28. He sits on a mailbox, and legend says he reads every postcard before it leaves, just to make sure the stamps are neat. Step inside and he may share some gossip from the dwarf world in a very official voice. Bring a postcard, write 'Greetings from Wrocław' to a friend and let Pocztowiec watch over its journey.

History & Significance

Pocztowiec was made by sculptor Beata Zwolańska-Hołod and appeared on 23 October 2008. He first sat on a mailbox in the passage by the entrance to the post office, Urząd Pocztowy Wrocław 32, and was later moved inside, where he still sits on a mailbox. The tradition he belongs to began with the Orange Alternative, the 1980s protest movement that painted dwarfs on walls, and since 2005 Wrocław has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs. Today there are well over 800 of them, but Pocztowiec is one of the few that live indoors.

Inspiration

Pocztowiec is a tribute to postal workers and to the old-fashioned joy of sending a letter. His name comes from 'poczta', the Polish word for the post, and means something like 'the postie'. He sits on a mailbox, the classic symbol of the post, in a post office that stands right on the Market Square. In an age of emails and messages, he reminds us that a handwritten card is still a small treasure.
