Story

Qubusiak peeks out of a giant ring as if through a porthole. In the photo he wears a flat cap with a little bobble on top, his beard tumbles over his chest, and a sly grin says he knows something you don't. Red brick is behind him and a pot of green moss peeps over his shoulder. The ring gives him a frame of his own, so he is one of the easiest dwarfs to photograph and one of the hardest to ignore.

History & Significance

Wromap.pl lists Qubusiak at Św. Marii Magdaleny 2, about 240 m from the centre of the Market Square, without naming a sculptor or date. The same address is given for Qubus Hotel Wrocław on hotel listings, and the name echoes 'Qubus', but I could not find a source that states the hotel commissioned the dwarf, so this page does not claim it. The tradition behind Wrocław's dwarfs began with the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them.

Inspiration

The sources I found do not explain Qubusiak's inspiration or sponsor. His name resembles Qubus, the hotel brand at the same address, but that remains an unconfirmed guess. What is certain from the photo is the ring around him and his cheerful, sly face.
