Story

Rycerz Jadwizanski is the only knight in all of Wroclaw's dwarf army. This armoured little warrior stands guard at the entrance to the Zamek Cultural Centre on pl. Swietojanski 1 in the Lesnica district, carrying a shield emblazoned with the Lesnica coat of arms. He is a proud defender of the castle and its community, channelling the medieval spirit of the historic Piast castle that stands behind him.

History & Significance

Rycerz Jadwizanski - the Hedwig Knight - stands at pl. Swietojanski 1 before the entrance to Centrum Kultury Zamek (the Castle Cultural Centre) in Lesnica, a western district of Wroclaw. The dwarf takes his name from Saint Hedwig of Silesia (Jadwiga Slaska), the patron saint of the region, who was closely connected to the Piast dynasty and the castles and monasteries of Silesia.

Inspiration

The Zamek in Lesnica is one of Wroclaw's most beautiful historic buildings, a medieval castle with origins in the 13th century that today serves as a cultural centre. Placing a knight dwarf here was a natural fit - he guards the threshold between the everyday city and this remarkable piece of Silesian heritage, welcoming visitors as a medieval sentinel in miniature.
