Story
Śpioszek is the sleepiest dwarf in the neighbourhood and proud of it. In the photo he lies with his eyes shut and his long beard flowing, wedged between great cushion-like folds of bronze as if the whole world were one big pillow. Dwarf lore says nothing wakes him except the smell of fresh rolls, and even that only on Sundays. If you pass by, tiptoe: his dreams are said to be quite elaborate.
History & Significance
Śpioszek stands at plac Katedralny 8 in Wrocław's Stare Miasto and was made by Sebastian Obst. wromap.pl also lists him as THE BRIDGEr. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful, non-violent protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; since 2005 the city has been filling its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. We found no installation date and no sponsor, and do not state any.
Inspiration
Śpioszek is a Polish word for a sleepyhead, and the photo matches it exactly: a dwarf with closed eyes, a long wavy beard and a pointed cap tucked between rounded, pillow-like shapes on a green-patinated surface. The alternative name THE BRIDGEr appears on wromap.pl, but no source we found explains it, so we do not guess.
