Story
Strączuś is a dwarf who cannot keep still. He stands with one hand raised in a friendly wave and the other holding up an open pea pod, its round peas lined up inside, and his tiny eyes are squeezed shut in a happy grin. He wears a pointed cap with a small tip and a thick beard that fans out below his chin. You will find him in Ołtaszyn at ul. Strączkowa 23, in front of a large boulder with a garden of yellow flowers behind him. The pea pod looks like the clue to his name, so see if the children in your group can work it out.
History & Significance
Strączuś was made by sculptor Marlena Zakrzewska according to wromap.pl. OpenStreetMap lists 15 August 2021 as the start date but no author, and wromap.pl gives no date. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace back to the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since the early 2000s the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them, many in the quieter districts far from the Market Square. We found no source saying who commissioned the dwarf.
Inspiration
The statue holds a pea pod, and his name appears to be built from strąk, the Polish word for a pod. The street he lives on, ul. Strączkowa, is named from a related word: strączkowe are legumes such as peas and beans. No source we found confirms that the street name inspired the dwarf, so we offer the connection as a likely link rather than a documented fact.
