Story
Sufrażystka is one of the few dwarf ladies of the Old Town, and she looks you straight in the eye with a calm, friendly smile. Long locks of hair frame her face, and the band of her hat reads Wrocławianka, a woman from Wrocław. She stands by a tree grate in the pedestrian area near ul. Szewska, with the shoppers of the centre walking past. The playful story is that she is always ready to give a speech to anyone who will listen, and she never loses an argument. Wave to her, and notice how the hat band shows her pride in her city.
History & Significance
Wromap.pl credits Beata Zwolańska-Hołod and gives 29 November 2018 as the date Sufrażystka appeared, listing her at ul. Szewska 81. Polish women won the right to vote in November 1918, so she appeared one day after the 100th anniversary of that decision. She stands among a group of dwarfs on this stretch of Szewska and Świdnicka, including Vincent, Glamour and Papa Krasnal.
Inspiration
Her name means suffragette, a woman who campaigned for the right to vote. In Poland, women gained that right in November 1918, soon after the country regained independence. The hat band calls her a Wrocławianka, a woman from Wrocław, which ties the national story to local pride.
