Story

Sylwester Chęciński is the dwarf who shouts 'Action!' Sitting at Marszałka Józefa Piłsudskiego 64A, he holds a big megaphone out towards you, wearing a jacket with a turned-up collar, a cap and a short grey beard. Film fans say he is the only dwarf in town who would happily make you do a scene twice. Stand in front of him and you can almost hear the clapperboard.

History & Significance

Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a peaceful, absurdist protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. This dwarf honours the film director Sylwester Chęciński, who was born on 21 May 1930 and died in Wrocław on 8 December 2021. According to wromap.pl he was made by Beata Zwolańska-Hołod and appeared on 20 April 2022, a few months after the director's death. Who commissioned the statue is not publicly documented.

Inspiration

Sylwester Chęciński directed the Polish comedy trilogy Sami swoi, Nie ma mocnych and Kochaj albo rzuć, among many other films. He lived in Wrocław, and the city marked his 90th birthday with a mural at Hubska 37 that shows the trilogy's characters and the director himself. The dwarf's megaphone, cap and jacket match the classic image of a film director at work; the photo shows all three.
