Story

Tysiąclatek is a school dwarf. He wears a flat cap and a jacket with a row of round buttons, a moustache and a neat beard, and he holds up a round sign on a stick marked SP 80 while a patterned ball (the kind a football might have) rests under his other arm. He lives at ul. Polna 4 in Brochów, at the entrance of a primary school, and the pavers around him are laid in a tidy grey grid. He was unveiled in 2024, so he is still a fresh discovery for young visitors who live nearby.

History & Significance

Tysiąclatek was unveiled and named on Friday 24 May 2024 at Primary School no. 80 (SP 80), according to the school's own website; wromap.pl and OpenStreetMap give the same date. The school's website says that for its 60th anniversary the school received a 10,000 zł voucher from the Mayor of Wrocław, Jacek Sutryk, which let it realise its dream of having a dwarf. The ceremony was led by the headteacher Małgorzata Lech with school inspector Zdzisław Lipiński. We did not find the name of the sculptor. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace back to the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since the early 2000s the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them, many in the quieter districts far from the Market Square.

Inspiration

The dwarf's name echoes the full name of the school, which according to its website bears the name of the Millennium of Wrocław (Tysiąclecia Wrocławia); tysiąclatek means roughly a thousand-year-old. The school says this name pushes its pupils to take part in contests about their home town, and its pupils won a city final of the Wrocławskie Krasnale knowledge contest in May 2024. The round SP 80 sign and the ball in his hand tie the dwarf firmly to school life.
