Story
Wioślarz 6 is one of the crew of a bronze rowing eight on the Oder embankment, about 1.9 km east of the Market Square. In the photo he sits in a long, narrow boat with a pointed cap on his head and his hands wrapped around an oar, leaning into the stroke, while another rower can be seen behind him and autumn leaves and acorns lie around the hull. Imagine the whole crew pulling together, each dwarf in perfect time, and hearing the coxswain calling the rhythm.
History & Significance
Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful, non-violent protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. wromap.pl lists this dwarf as Wioślarz 6, also known as Capi, one of the group Wioślarze (Ósemka), made by Beata Zwolańska-Hołod, and dates it to 28 May 2016. wroclaw.pl reports that rowing dwarfs were unveiled on 28 May 2016 at the new Bulwar Politechniki Wrocławskiej, in the presence of both university rectors and Olympic silver medallist Paweł Rańda, which matches the date. The two sources differ slightly on the address, since wromap.pl says Wybrzeże Stanisława Wyspiańskiego 41 and the city database says number 40.
Inspiration
The group honours the rowing eight of Wrocław University of Science and Technology: wroclaw.pl describes a classic men's eight rowing with a woman as coxswain, and wromap.pl lists a coxswain, Sterniczka Beata, among the group. wroclaw.pl says the university is proud of its rowing eight; the sources do not say who is represented by number 6 in particular.
