Story
Wioslarz 4 holds the middle position in the Osemka — the bronze rowing eight of dwarfs anchored to the Bulwar Politechniki Wroclawskiej along the Odra River. The middle seat in a rowing boat is neither the glamorous lead nor the last in line: it is the engine room, the place where raw power is applied. Wioslarz 4 is therefore the quiet workhorse of the crew, the one who keeps pulling steadily when the front-seat rowers begin to tire. In the world of dwarfs, that makes him one of the most admirable of all.
History & Significance
Wioslarz 4 was installed as part of the Osemka group on 28 May 2016 at Wybrzeze Stanisława Wyspianskiego 41. The group commemorates the historic rowing culture of Wroclaw's Odra riverbank, where racing dwarfs were preceded by real racing boats as far back as 1882. The sculptor of the entire crew is Beata Zwolanska-Holod, and the crew installation accompanied the opening of the Bulwar Politechniki Wroclawskiej — a major riverside regeneration project.
Inspiration
The middle seat in a competitive rowing boat belongs to the so-called 'engine' rowers — those who provide the bulk of the boat's power without the prestige of setting the rhythm or the glory of being last in. Placing Wioslarz 4 here is a quiet celebration of teamwork and collective effort: the message being that great achievements require everyone pulling together, not just the stars at the bow. On opening day, real crews demonstrated this on the water in the Odra River Cup regatta.
