Story
WOŚPek is the dwarf with the biggest heart on Wrocław's Market Square - literally. He stands on the Rynek near Santander Bank, close to the Fredro monument, holding a shiny red heart in his hands and a collection box of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (WOŚP). The dwarfs say he was chosen as the head of their collecting team, and that every time someone smiles at him, his bronze heart glows a little warmer. Next to him is a small tablet with a QR code, so visitors can drop a real donation into his virtual box. Stop by, make a heart with your hands, and you'll see why he is the friendliest collector in town.
History & Significance
WOŚPek was unveiled on Sunday 26 January 2025, during the 33rd Grand Finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, with WOŚP volunteers gathered on the Market Square. His collection box is marked with that Finale, which raised money for children fighting cancer and blood diseases. He was introduced as the head of the dwarfs' fundraising team for that year's Finale in Wrocław. His arrival continues the tradition that began with the Orange Alternative, the 1980s protest movement that painted dwarfs on city walls, and the bronze dwarfs the city has installed since 2005.
Inspiration
WOŚPek honours the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (Wielka Orkiestra Świątecznej Pomocy, WOŚP), Poland's biggest charity event. Every January, volunteers across the country collect money in collection boxes during a day of concerts, and donors get the famous red heart sticker. The money buys medical equipment for hospitals, especially for children. The dwarf's name is a playful diminutive of 'WOŚP', and his red heart is the charity's own symbol.
