Story
Wyrostek and Zadymek are a pair of mischief-makers who settled on Plac Solny, the old salt market. Local legend says they met while arguing over who had the better spot among the flower stalls, and have been sitting side by side ever since, pretending not to be friends. Crouch down to their level and you will meet a dwarf with a magnificent upturned moustache who looks as if he is about to tell you a very long story.
History & Significance
Wyrostek i Zadymek (Wyrostek and Zadymek) are listed on wromap.pl at Plac Solny 11A as a group of two dwarfs by sculptor Kacper Kuźnicki; no installation date is given there, and I found no second source for the author. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful anti-communist protest movement: on the nights of 30 and 31 August 1982 Waldemar 'Major' Fydrych painted the first dwarfs on walls in Sępolno and Biskupin. The first bronze dwarf, Papa Krasnal, was unveiled in 2001 on ul. Kazimierza Wielkiego, and in 2005 the city commissioned Tomasz Moczek to make five more, which started the collection.
Inspiration
The dwarfs' names are ordinary Polish words made into nicknames: 'wyrostek' means a youngster or lad, and 'Zadymek' echoes 'zadyma', slang for a commotion or ruckus. No source I found explains why this pair was placed on Plac Solny or who commissioned them, so the playful reading of their names is the only clue to their character.
