Story
Zecer is a bearded little craftsman in a flat cap who seems to take his work very seriously. In his hands he holds a small metal block that looks like a piece of printing type, so picture him arranging letters one by one, making sure every word on the page is in the right place. Stop for a moment and look closely: the tiny details of his face are what make him fun to find.
History & Significance
Zecer stands at plac Teatralny 5 in Wrocław's Old Town. wromap.pl credits Tomasz Moczek as the sculptor. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grow out of the Orange Alternative, a playful, peaceful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; since 2005 the city has been filling its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them.
Inspiration
His name is the Polish word for a typesetter, the person who once assembled printed pages from metal letters. The map site wromap.pl lists him as 'Zecer (Heidelberg)'; Heidelberg is also the name of a well-known German maker of printing presses, but none of the sources we found says outright that this is the link. The photo shows him holding a small metal block that fits the printing theme.
