Story
Żernikuś stands inside a building in Żerniki, in the west of Wrocław, at Rumiankowa 34, about 7.5 km from the Market Square as the crow flies. What you will see: a rough-textured bronze dwarf in a floppy cap with a long beard, photographed indoors against a pale wall and a blue floor. We describe only what the photo and the sources show - no legend is attached to this dwarf in anything we found. Take a moment to look at the small details, and if you are visiting with children, ask them what the dwarf might be thinking about. The statue is inside a building, so check that the building is open before you set off.
History & Significance
Wrocław's bronze dwarfs trace their origins to the Orange Alternative (Pomarańczowa Alternatywa), a peaceful protest movement founded in the city in 1986 by Waldemar Fydrych, whose activists painted dwarfs on walls as a form of absurdist, non-violent resistance. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them, far beyond the old centre. According to wromap, Żernikuś was made by Tomasz Moczek and appeared on 15 May 2013. Who commissioned this dwarf is not documented in anything we found.
Inspiration
His name is a diminutive of Żerniki, the neighbourhood where he lives. Wromap says he stands inside a building, and the address Rumiankowa 34 belongs to School and Preschool Complex No. 10 (Zespół Szkolno-Przedszkolny nr 10), according to a wroclaw.pl article. Neither source says explicitly that the dwarf belongs to the school, so treat that link as likely rather than confirmed.
