Story

Budoludki are not one, but two dwarfs — Mr Engineer and Ms Engineer — standing side by side at ul. Odrzańska 22, both wearing hard hats and high-visibility vests. She holds a set of architectural drawings, while he raises his right hand skyward pointing at an imaginary rising structure, left hand gripping a draughting pencil. Together they argue endlessly (and cheerfully) about whether the load-bearing wall should be moved three centimetres to the left. Neither will back down — and honestly, neither should.

History & Significance

Budoludki were designed and cast by sculptor Beata Zwolańska-Hołod and installed on 9 May 2017 in front of the headquarters of the Lower Silesian District Chamber of Civil Engineers (Dolnośląska Okręgowa Izba Inżynierów Budownictwa — DOIIB) at ul. Odrzańska 22. They were commissioned by the chamber as a symbol of the engineering profession.

Inspiration

The two figures represent the key virtues of a civil engineer: diligence, perseverance, problem-solving ability, a friendly attitude, cheerfulness, and modesty — as the DOIIB officially put it. The dual nature of the sculpture also reflects the growing presence of women in engineering, with both genders represented equally at partner level. The names 'Budoludki' playfully blend 'budownictwo' (construction/civil engineering) with 'ludki' (little people/folk).

Fun Facts

  • Budoludki are one of the very few dwarf pairs in Wrocław representing two characters simultaneously.
  • Ms Engineer holds a full set of blueprints, while Mr Engineer points with his right hand — together they cover both planning and on-site management.
  • Their name merges 'budownictwo' (civil engineering) and 'ludki' (little people), making it a perfectly punny job description.
  • The sculpture was unveiled on 9 May 2017, coinciding with celebrations at the Lower Silesian Chamber of Engineers.
  • Sculptor Beata Zwolańska-Hołod, one of Wrocław's most prolific dwarf makers, crafted both figures — she has created dozens of dwarfs across the city.
