Story

Pracz Odrzański is a hard-working dwarf who scrubs his laundry right at the edge of the Oder, on the Sand Island by the Piaskowy Bridge, at ul. św. Jadwigi 3/4. Legend says the river gives the softest water in all of Wrocław, which is why he never needs soap, only elbow grease. He rubs, wrings and rinses from dawn until dusk, and the shirts of the whole dwarf neighbourhood end up drying on the riverbank. Stand by the water, listen to the boats and the splashing, and you will see why he chose the most peaceful laundry spot in the city.

History & Significance

Pracz Odrzański is one of the very first Wrocław dwarfs. He belongs to the first group of five official dwarfs, made by sculptor Tomasz Moczek in the first days of August 2005, together with Szermierz, Rzeźnik and the two Syzyfki. Before that, only one bronze dwarf stood in the city, Papa Krasnal, placed on Świdnicka Street in 2001 as a tribute to the Orange Alternative, the 1980s protest movement that painted dwarfs on walls. Today there are well over 800 dwarfs in Wrocław, and this washerman is a true senior citizen among them.

Inspiration

Pracz Odrzański, the 'Oder Washer', recalls the days when the river and its canals served as the city's wash-house. Wrocław grew up around water, and for centuries people washed linen in the Oder and in the streams around the islands. His spot beside the Piaskowy Bridge on the Sand Island, a quiet island with historic churches, is a nod to that old riverside life. Pracz means a washerman or launderer, and Odrzański means 'of the Oder', so his name tells you both his job and his home.

Fun Facts

  • He is one of the original five dwarfs of 2005 and a true senior of the dwarf world.
  • Only Papa Krasnal, placed in 2001, is older among the bronze dwarfs of Wrocław.
  • His name means 'Oder washerman', after the river that flows right beside him.
  • Julianka and Wromeo stand about 60 metres to the east, so one riverside stroll gives you three dwarfs.
  • From the Rynek he is only about 700 metres away, roughly a ten-minute walk.

How to Find This Dwarf

From the Old Town Hall, walk about ten minutes (around 700 metres) north-east towards the Oder and the Piaskowy Bridge. He sits at the riverbank by the bridge, at the end of ul. św. Jadwigi. Julianka and Wromeo are a short walk east of him. Your mission: guess how many shirts would fit on a dwarf's washing line along the riverbank, then count the bridges and boats you can spot. Keep well back from the water's edge.
