Story

Moteusz is the world's most well-travelled yarn enthusiast, a dwarf who has rifled through the finest wool from east to west, handled the most exquisite knitting accessories money can buy, and still felt that something was missing. A chance conversation beneath a linden tree led him to the knitters of Nadodrzé, who told him about a magical place at pl. Staszica 20 — the e-dziewiarka yarn shop. He arrived, wound his enormous beard into a ball of yarn (it is, according to legend, the very ball he carries), and has never left.

History & Significance

Moteusz sits at pl. Stanislawa Staszica 20 in the Nadodrzé district, in the shopfront window of e-dziewiarka.pl, Wroclaw's beloved specialist yarn and knitting accessories shop. He was installed on 2 February 2014, making him one of the earlier Nadodrzé dwarfs. The sculptor was Piotr Rychel, with the casting by Piotr Makała. Nadodrzé is one of Wroclaw's most characterful districts — a historic neighbourhood undergoing gentle regeneration, full of independent shops, murals, and a thriving creative community.

Inspiration

E-dziewiarka.pl, an online and physical yarn shop based in Wroclaw, commissioned Moteusz as the store's own krasnal mascot. The name blends 'motek' (a ball of yarn) with a dwarf suffix — 'Moteusz' is basically a dwarf made of yarn. The story that his beard is wound into the ball he holds is a wonderful piece of small-scale mythology, making every loop of wool feel somehow connected to the dwarf himself.

Fun Facts

  • His name is a blend of 'motek' (a ball of yarn) and a dwarf suffix — making him literally a 'yarn dwarf'.
  • According to legend, the ball of yarn he holds is actually his own enormous beard, carefully wound up.
  • He was installed on 2 February 2014 — the sculptor was Piotr Rychel and the casting was done by Piotr Makała.
  • Nadodrzé, the neighbourhood he calls home, is one of Wroclaw's most historically preserved districts, with a neo-Gothic railway station from 1868.
  • E-dziewiarka.pl holds regular knitting meet-ups on the second Saturday of each month at the shop — Moteusz is always the most attentive attendee.

How to Find This Dwarf

Take tram line 10 or 7 to the Dworzec Nadodrze stop and walk about 6 minutes south-east to pl. Staszica. The e-dziewiarka shop is at number 20, and Moteusz sits visibly in the shop window. Coming from the city centre by tram (lines 9 or 4 towards Nadodrzé) also works well.
