Story
Adam Grand is a dwarf of few words and a great deal of dignity. He keeps a watchful, slightly pursed look on his face, as if he is weighing up every passer-by on Rzeźnicza Street before deciding whether they deserve a smile. Children who say hello politely are said to get a tiny nod in return.
History & Significance
Adam Grand is listed on wromap.pl at Rzeźnicza 1 and credited to Tomasz Moczek, the sculptor who made the first five bronze dwarfs for the city in 2005; no installation date is given and I found no second source for the author. Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful anti-communist protest movement: on the nights of 30 and 31 August 1982 Waldemar 'Major' Fydrych painted the first dwarfs on walls in Sępolno and Biskupin. The first bronze dwarf, Papa Krasnal, was unveiled in 2001 on ul. Kazimierza Wielkiego, and in 2005 the city commissioned Tomasz Moczek to make five more, which started the collection.
Inspiration
I could not find any source explaining who Adam Grand is named after or who commissioned him, so the page makes no claim about it. In the photo he is a small, dark bronze dwarf in a rounded cap with a serious, slightly pouting expression, set against a dark polished surface.
