Story
Budowlaniec is the newest hard hat on plac Grunwaldzki, about 1.8 km east of the Market Square. In the photo this bearded dwarf wears a hard hat, holds a hammer in one hand and shows off a bronze plaque with the other, as if announcing that the job has been finished on time. The plaque appears to read 80 LAT WBLiW PWr 1945–2025. Imagine him fresh from the building site, brushing off the dust and posing proudly beside the date.
History & Significance
Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful, non-violent protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. According to wromap.pl, Budowlaniec appeared on 22 October 2025 at plac Grunwaldzki 11, and the author is listed as Biały Kot, which looks like a studio name rather than a person. The photo shows a plaque that appears to read 80 LAT WBLiW PWr 1945–2025. I read it from the photo, and a search confirmed that the Faculty of Civil Engineering of Wrocław University of Technology was founded in 1945, so the anniversary is plausible. No source I found states the commission or the sponsor in words.
Inspiration
A builder with a hard hat and hammer suits a civil-engineering anniversary, and the plaque in the photo seems to mark 80 years of a faculty abbreviated WBLiW (Wydział Budownictwa Lądowego i Wodnego, the Faculty of Civil Engineering) at PWr (Wrocław University of Science and Technology), 1945–2025. I read the plaque from the photo and did not find a source stating the dedication, so treat this as likely rather than confirmed.
