Story

MOSTowiak stands on plac Grunwaldzki, about 1.6 km east of the Market Square, and he is a very new arrival. In the photo this bearded dwarf perches on a rough stone block in front of a red-brick wall with his arms flung wide, one hand open in a wave and the other holding up something flat and shield-shaped. He looks like a host welcoming everyone who comes by. Imagine him greeting the students and commuters who stream past this busy square every day.

History & Significance

Wrocław's bronze dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful, non-violent protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls. Since 2005 the city has filled its streets with bronze dwarfs, and there are now hundreds of them. According to wromap.pl, MOSTowiak was made by Marlena Zakrzewska and appeared on 24 May 2025, at the address plac Grunwaldzki 3. I found no other source that confirms the date or says who commissioned him.

Inspiration

His name plays on the Polish word most, a bridge. The sources I checked do not say what he commemorates, so the bridge link is only a reading of the name. The photo shows him with a flat, shield-shaped object in one hand and the other hand raised in greeting.
