Story
Diakonki is a pair of bronze dwarfs called Opiekun and Senior, which in Polish roughly mean 'the Carer' and 'the Elder'. The photo shows a smiling dwarf with a scarf around his neck, looking up with a gentle face, standing on block paving scattered with autumn leaves. Imagine the two of them keeping company: one looks after, the other is looked after.
History & Significance
According to wromap.pl, Diakonki is a group of two dwarfs, Opiekun and Senior, made by Sebastian Obst and placed at ul. Księdza Marcina Lutra 2; wromap.pl adds that access may be limited by a gate, fence or barrier. It gives no appearance date, while one online directory says the dwarf was installed in 2019, so the date is not confirmed. Wrocław's dwarfs grew out of the Orange Alternative, a playful protest movement of the 1980s whose members painted dwarfs on city walls; the first bronze dwarf was placed on ul. Świdnicka in 2001, and hundreds have followed since.
Inspiration
The name Diakonki seems to come from diakonia, the Christian tradition of charitable service, and the names Opiekun ('carer') and Senior point to care for older people. We found no source that states this, so it is an interpretation of the names rather than a documented fact. The street is named after Martin Luther (Ksiądz Marcin Luter).
